How to Protect Your Hair When Using a Flat Iron

When using heat styling tools on your hair, it is important to take the necessary steps to protect your hair or you could end up with some very undesirable results.

Many people do not realize that even the highest quality professional ceramic and tourmaline flat irons can have a damaging effect on your hair if used incorrectly or too frequently, or if your hair is not adequately protected. Heat damage to your hair is hard to repair, and most of the time you will have to cut your hair to get rid of the damage.

As you probably know, temporarily straightening your hair with a flat iron is done by applying heated plates to the length of your hair. The heat straightens your hair by breaking and then reforming the hydrogen bonds in the inside of your hair. When the right precautions are not taken, this can harm your hair’s outer protective layer causing weakness and breakage.

Flat ironing your hair (or any type of heat styling) can cause two different types of damage to your hair cuticle. The kind of damage that occurs depends on whether your hair is styled while it is wet or dry. There are products that can be used to make the damage appear less noticeable, but your hair is not able to “heal”, so the damage never actually goes away until you cut your hair.

  • Heat styling dry hair causes radial and axial cracking along the edges of the hair cuticle, which makes your hair weaker and can lead to breakage, chipping and split ends. Most of the time these effects are severe enough that they cannot be reversed and you would have to cut your hair to get rid of the damage.
  • Heat styling wet or damp hair causes the water in the hair to explode out in little moisture bursts. This causes a buckling and bubbling effect on the hair cuticle along the entire length of your hair, and has the appearance of a blister when you look at it closely.

Since heat damage to your hair is hard (if not impossible) to repair, it’s much easier to try to avoid it altogether. Heat styling, when done properly, can cause only minimal damage that you won’t even be able to notice. It is possible to flat iron your hair and keep it healthy, shiny, and smooth at the same time! Here are some tips for reducing heat damage when using a ceramic flat iron:

  • Do not flat iron (or heat style) your hair every day. The more frequently you do it, the more damage you are causing to your hair. It has been recommended by dermatologists to not straighten your hair more than three times a week.
  • Make sure your hair is moisturized! Before you style, wash your hair with a good moisturizing shampoo and use a good conditioner that restores moisture to the hair shaft. You can also use a leave-in conditioner for added moisture and protection. It is also a good idea to do a restorative deep conditioning treatment on your hair once a week.
  • When you have the time, do not blow dry your hair, and let it air dry before you flat iron it. Wet hair is much more susceptible to damage than dry hair is, and applying the heat of a blow dryer while your hair is wet can cause distress. It can also over-dry your hair, making it appear dull and brittle.
  • If you don’t have the time to let your hair dry naturally and you must blow dry it (use an ionic blow dryer if possible), make sure you use a protective spray all throughout your hair, and use the cool setting on your hair dryer.
  • Before you begin to flat iron your hair, make sure it is completely dry (unless you are using a wet-to-dry flat iron). Wet hair and heat are not a good combination because your hair is weaker when it is wet and it can be damaged more easily.
  • After all moisture is gone from your hair, smooth in a heat protectant product. These are oils and serums that give your hair an extra defense against the heat and add a layer of protection between your hair and the flat iron. They also make your hair more manageable and shiny.
  • Use a flat iron with variable temperature controls, so you can decide how hot you want it to be. Use the lowest heat setting possible that will get the job done.
  • Use a high quality flat iron with ceramic or tourmaline plates instead of metal plates. Ceramic and tourmaline materials produce far-infrared heat and negative ions that lock in your hairs natural oils and moisture to prevent it from drying out. Ceramic and tourmaline flat irons are also better at combating frizz, and also give you much sleeker and smoother results than a metal flat iron. It is definitely worth it to spend more money on a quality flat iron that will not cause nearly as much damage.

Although damage to your hair cannot be completely prevented if you intend to use heat styling tools, it can be drastically reduced if you take the steps to protect your hair. Flat irons enable women of all hair types and textures to have beautiful straight and silky hair, and if you are going to use one just make sure you protect your hair!

Simple Rules For Personal Health and Hygiene

Have you been following a plan for your own personal hygiene, or do you get up in the morning, take a bath, brush and blow dry your hair, use the bathroom through the day, and go to bed at night? If you only do the latter, you need to put more planning and preparation into your personal care and grooming.

Cleanliness is seen nowadays as next to Godliness, and neglect of your own personal hygiene may cause health and social problems of which you are not even aware. Bad breath, for example, is a common problem–the perpetrator is often accused of it, but he or she may not be attending to it. Problems such as dandruff are forgivable, but good looks are usually the result of great care and attention paid to personal grooming. You should put some time and effort into it if you want to feel and look your best every day.

All external parts of the body need time and attention. Below is a partial list of the body parts which you should be taking care of with your grooming plan. Here are some tips as to how to attend to your most common and ordinary daily grooming needs.

HAIR

First of all, keep your hair at a length and style which you can properly maintain in a cleanly manner at all times. Wash your crowning glory at least twice per week, using a mild shampoo devoid of borax or alkalis. It is not a good idea to use soap, as it can leave a fine film of stickiness in your hair. Shampoo is meant to wash totally out of your hair. Be sure and carefully towel dry your hair after you wash it, and be cautious with the blow dryer. You don’t want your hair to become too dry and brittle. Especially if you have long or thick hair, brush it three to four times per day, using a soft bristled brush or wide toothed comb. Be sure to wash your hair grooming tools every time you wash your hair. And oil your scalp with grooming oil once per week, preferably one hour before you wash it. A hot oil treatment is fine–if you know exactly what you are doing.

Hair coloring or dye is not recommended, as no current dyes have been found to be completely safe for long term use. They contain chemicals which can seep into your scalp and even cause premature hair loss. So we recommend not using hair dye if possible. Also, try not to wear a hat for a very long period of time. Wearing hats has also been shown to cause premature hair loss. Redheads need to be particularly concerned, as they are subject to early hair loss.

SKIN

A good bath once or twice per day is essential for cleanliness and good grooming. You should always bathe after any strenuous physical activity. Mild soaps are best, and you don’t need to use a germicidal or antiseptic soap unless you have a medical or “smelliness” problem. Bath brushes, bath sponges, and mildly abrasive scrubbers are recommended. You must also pay special attention to your genitals and anal area, as lack of care paid to these can lead to serious infections–as well as an inadequate sex life. Rinse yourself thoroughly after washing, and be sure to use a dry and clean towel to properly dry yourself. Don’t ever share towels, try not to share bathing equipment, and wash all of your equipment after each bath. Putting a teaspoonful of bleach in one gallon of warm water, rinse your bathing equipment in the water, and then under warm running water. And always change into completely clean underwear after each bath.

It’s good to use a fine organic moisturizing oil or cream every day, especially as you get older. Put it on at night to avoid that sticky feeling, and so as to not attract dust and filmy dirt throughout the day.

TEETH

Brush your teeth two to three times every day, or after meals or snacks as needed. It’s important especially to brush right before bedtime. Pay attention to getting rid of the food particles stuck between your teeth. Flossing is highly recommended over toothpicks for this. You only need about a pea sized dab of toothpaste on your toothbrush. When brushing, brush down on the upper teeth and brush up on the lower teeth, using a circular motion. Also, brush the inner as well as the outer surface of your teeth, and before you brush each time, carefully brush your tongue.

Your toothbrush should never be shared with anyone. It should have resilient bristles, and it should be well rinsed and left somewhere completely sanitary to dry after each usage. Try to use organic toothpaste, one that’s completely safe and free of harsh abrasives or strong antiseptics. Baking soda has been found to be a very effective substitute for toothpaste, if you don’t mind its strong flavor.

HANDS

You should always be washing your hands. There’s no such thing as too often. Use a good hand cream if they become dry. Pay attention to your fingernails when you wash your hands. A good nail brush placed near your bathroom sink is a sound investment. Use soap every time you wash, and always wash before and after meals–and after you go to the bathroom. Many infections such as E. coli are caused every day by people who don’t wash their hands after going to the bathroom. You should also keep washing your hands while preparing meals.

NAILS

Your fingernails completely replace themselves every five to six months. You need to keep them well trimmed, and preferably buffed and polished too. Men can buff their nails and use a nail shining tool instead of polish to give their nails a healthy glow. Women may of course polish their nails with beautiful colors, which can hide the discoloration that comes with age. Clip your nails to the length you want them, but don’t ever trim too close to the skin. If your nails chip easily, consider adding more protein to your diet, as finger and toenails are all made of protein. Eating gelatin can work for this.

Very brittle, highly yellow or discolored nails can be a sign of a serious health problem. Please see your doctor immediately if you have this. Also, do not always keep your nails painted with polish. This can lead to stripping of the natural keratin of the nails. Also, either go out or give yourself a home manicure and a pedicure once every couple of weeks. Be sure and buy a very good manicure kit for this purpose.

FEET

Many people take no care whatsoever of their own feet, usually to their detriment. Always keep your toenails clipped, shaping the nails but not cutting too close to the skin. Always give your feet a good scrubbing with a pumice stone or mildly abrasive brush when taking a bath, and before you put on your socks, dry carefully between your toes. Try wearing a clean pair of cotton socks every day; this will pamper your feet and keep them dry and not smelly. Powder your feet after you take a bath. Try not to wear the same pair of shoes every day, and alternate wearing your shoe pairs. And make sure you wear comfortable shoes. Comfort and safety should come before stylishness. High heels can lead to the shortening of important calf muscles.

DEODORANT

Your underarms don’t emit an odor until you hit your preteens. That’s when your apocrine glands, which are located under your arms and around your genitals, begin to function, producing a milky, oily type of perspiration. Bacteria then thrive in this sweat, causing the familiar underarm odor.

To control strong odor, you can wash daily with an antibacterial soap such as Lever 2000. You should always wear clean clothes that are free of staining and sweat. Use a deodorant that is also an antiperspirant, which will dry up moisture in the armpits. Cut back on your caffeine intake-it puts your apocrine glands into overdrive. After a bath, dust yourself liberally with a fine talcum powder. Always drink plenty of water, both to flush your system of toxins and to regulate your bowels. This alone may end some problems you may have with “smelliness.”

TANNING

Getting a “healthy tan” is not considered to be healthy anymore. Now doctors are telling us that you shouldn’t mind your pale skin. Skin cancer, which is often deadly, is not a fair trade for good looks. When sunning, protect your fair skin with an at least SPF 30 sunscreen lotion. Keep your skin oiled and moisturized during the summer, and don’t bother with the “bronze look.”

BODY HAIR

Around puberty, your hair follicles respond to hormones raging in your body. You can end up with hair around your belly button, on your back, near your breasts and for both women and men, on your upper lip. If it’s especially coarse, show your doctor, as you may have a treatable hormonal imbalance. Some such “peach fuzz” is normal for girls, and if it seems unsightly to you, you can try bleaching or removing it. Nair is known to be a gentle permanent hair remover.

8 Ways to Grow Your HAIR Faster

It’s a known fact of life: Girls are always changing their hair. They grow it out for years, just to realize that they want their hair to be short. After a week of short hair, they realize that they miss their long hair and start the cycle all over again. Actually, in today’s world of the “Justin Bieber Hairstyle,” a lot of guys are even trying to grow their hair faster.

Well, personally, my hair is still recovering up from a bad haircut. It was basically chopped into a mullet and has never fully recovered. Because I want to grow my hair long faster, like you, and I am sick of putting in my extensions every day, I am going to teach you ways that will legitimately help your hair grow faster.

1. Try To Keep Your Hair From Damaging

The first thing you can do to help grow your hair faster is to eliminate sources of damage.

Just so you know, I am the *queen* of damaged hair.

I can’t even count how many times I have colored my hair black, just to bleach it back to platinum blonde again, and back and forth.

The last time that I colored my hair platinum blonde, I committed to keeping it that way. I try to go as long as possible in between hair colors to give it time to heal. People ask me all the time how my hair is so healthy, soft and shiny, even though I bleach it. I am constantly reconditioning it in between colors. I really like the It’s a 10 Miracle Hair Masque. When I am at home, doing chores, I’ll put some conditioner in my hair, put a plastic bag around it, and leave it. Sometimes, I will even sleep with it in my hair. I also try to keep my flat-iron use minimal. If you do flat-iron your hair every day, do use a protectant /conditioning spray, like the HealthySexyHair “Soya Want Flat Hair Flat Iron Spray”, which infuses your hair with protein as you use it. I also use protein shampoo/conditioner often. Dumb Blonde by Bedhead is my favorite. Keep in mind that your hair needs more than just protein. I live in Nevada, where there is usually about 0% humidity, so every once in a while I use a Moisturizing Shampoo. My favorite is Bedhead Urban Antidotes Recovery Level 2. Okay, now that we understand how vital it is to keep your hair healthy…

2. Trim Your Hair Every 6 Weeks

A lot of people don’t think cutting your hair will help it grow faster. And although, it doesn’t make it grow faster, it will eliminate split ends, which could lead to shorter hair. The best analogy I have ever heard, is to think of your hair like a piece of rope. When rope starts to fray, you have to burn the piece that is frayed, or else it will continue to fray further up the rope. If you have split ends, and you don’t trim them, they may continue to split further up your hair, causing breakage. Breakage means shorter hair. We can’t have that if we are trying to grow it out faster.

You don’t have to cut a lot of hair off. Just be very sure to express to your hair stylist that you only want to trim the tips of your hair because you are trying to grow it out, and want the split ends cut off. Also be sure to let them know not to cut off more than a quarter/half-inch. The better communication you give to your stylist, the better he/she can understand what you want and deliver it to you.

3. Take Vitamins

You probably always hear that prenatal vitamins make your hair grow faster. I have researched that topic a lot in the past, and it turns out that an abundance of hormones produced while pregnant is what really makes your hair grow, not the prenatal vitamins.

Here is a hair lesson: For normal people, at any given time, 90% of their hair is in the growth phase, while the other 10% is in a resting phase. This is why your hair grows uneven after a haircut. After the resting phase, your hair follicle prepares for the shedding phase. It is normal for anyone to lose about 50-100 hair strands per day.

The increased level of estrogen present in pregnant women causes ALL of your hair to stay in it’s growing phase. Therefore, you are not losing any hair (which gives the impression that your hair is growing faster). Hair texture and color have also been noted to change during pregnancy. Now keep in mind, before you rush out to get pregnant, that pregnant women lose a TON of hair after they have a baby. This is because the estrogen level drops back down to normal, and they shed all of the hair that they didn’t lose while they were pregnant.

So even if prenatal vitamins are a bust, there are still other vitamins that help your hair grow faster. Vitamins rich in B-complex are known to help your hair grow a great deal. Vitamin B-complex contains biotin, folic acid and insositol which help rotate the growth cycle of your hair quicker than it did before. There is even vitamin B-complex shampoo that is said to help your hair grow faster. It is said that flax-seed oil, vitamin E, and vitamin A all also help grow your hair faster. Personally, I have used the Nioxin Vitamins that are designed for growing hair, and also “hair, skin and nails” pills, and have seen positive effects with both of them.

4. Eliminate factors that impede hair growth

Keep in mind, that every thing you put in your body comes out through your hair. Different types of medications cause different reactions to your hair. Sometimes, medications will cause a color or perm to not take, and also some can make your hair fall out. Your hair will not grow faster if you are constantly losing hair. Common types of medications that cause hair loss are Acne medications, antibiotics, antidepressants, birth control, anti-clotting pills, cholesterol lowering, drugs that suppress the immune system, epilepsy drugs, drugs used in breast cancer, high-blood pressure medications, hormone replacement, mood stabilizers, steroids, weight-loss drugs and thyroid medications. It does depend on what dosage you take and how sensitive you are to them. I don’t know much about the health industry, so I would recommend talking to a doctor about what you take.

Now medications are a hard thing to deal with because many of us need our drugs. But another thing to keep in mind is that if you are unhealthy, so is your hair. Eating healthier food, drinking a lot of water, not smoking/drinking alcohol are all factors that play a part in hair growth.

Another big problem is stress. Stress does a number of horrific things to your body but can also trigger hair loss. It’s easier said than done sometimes, but try to de-stress if you want your hair to grow faster.

5. Stimulate your scalp

There’s an old wives tale that states if you brush your hair 100 times every night before you go to sleep, it will make your hair grow faster. Not only is that not true, but brushing your hair is actually bad for your hair. The bristles get caught in small tangles and usually rip hair out, creating our enemy: breakage. When your hair is wet, you should comb it with a wide-tooth comb to help eliminate breakage.

There is something called “Scientific Brushing” that is said to help grow hair faster though. It is vital that you use a natural bristle brush and remember, you are brushing it against your scalp, not your hair. You brush all around your hairline first, then you brush in 1/2 inch subsections throughout your scalp. When you brush, do a rolling motion. The bristles stimulate and bring blood flow to your scalp, which encourages hair to grow faster. Do this before you shampoo your hair. I would also comb it first to make sure there are no tangles. Scientific brushing can also help with dandruff.

When you shampoo your hair, really massage your scalp. This does the same thing as the scientific brushing. Sometimes, it’s even better to shampoo your hair twice so you get a better lather. I would spend a few minutes massaging your scalp. Not only does it help, but it also feels good!

6. Nioxin / Invati

Working in the hair industry, I have heard a ton of good things about Nioxin. In fact, I had one client that specifically told me that it was so weird because hair was growing so much, and she had a lot of new growth. She couldn’t figure out why it was growing. I asked her what she used. She said “Nioxin”. I told her that Nioxin is formulated to make your hair grow and she didn’t even know that. Now she’s hooked on it for life. She will buy another bottle before she even runs out, so she never has to go without it. It works by detoxifying your scalp, removing and neutralizing toxins, cleaning out the pores, and reducing scalp inflammation. It also cleanses hormones from the hair follicle that causes male pattern baldness.

It’s a controversial topic if Nioxin actually works or not to make hair grow faster. The answer is it works differently on everyone. I’ve heard people say that they’ve used it for months upon months and seen no difference. I also know people who swear by it. It is not known if it actually makes your hair grow faster or just stops you from losing hair. Either way, I believe it works, and the fact that it keeps your scalp healthy, can’t hurt. I know that the best results are seen when the cleanser, scalp therapy conditioner, and the scalp treatment (which you spray on after you get out of the shower) are all used. I recommend a starter kit like this one. I also know that it takes a few months to start seeing noticeable results. I have heard people say that they think Nioxin dries their hair out, but my own personal experience is that it makes my hair feel very soft and hydrated when I use it.

Yesterday, it was brought to my attention that there is a new product similar to Nioxin, made by Aveda, called Invati. I can’t really tell you anything about it, but it is supposed to work well, and Aveda is at trustworthy name, so I would expect it to be good.

7. Eat a lot of protein

I know someone who is getting a gastrointestinal bypass real soon. The doctors instructed her that she needs to eat a lot of protein before, and after the surgery. The doctor told her that all the extra protein will make her hair grow faster. It makes sense, right? Hair is composed of 80% protein. If your body is not getting enough protein, it may not have enough to give your hair follicles, and therefore your hair will grow slower.

8. Rogaine

If all else fails, there is always Rogaine. Rogaine is the only FDA approved, over-the-counter topical medication that is actually proved to make your hair grow faster. Minoxidil is the active ingredient in Rogaine, and exactly how it works is unproven. It was originally a drug used to treat high blood pressure, but it turns out that it works better for growing hair than keeping blood pressure down. A 16 week study showed that 85% of people using it correctly experienced new hair growth. Only mild side-effects have been reported, including scalp irritation and itching. I say its worth a shot!

Cycling Your Way to Fitness: A Weight Loss Guide

More and more studies are showing that cycling, when done regularly, can reduce weight, improve cardiovascular health, reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes, strengnthes and tones the muscles, and relieves stress. These are just some of the benefits that one can get from cycling.

Compared to exercising in the gym, cycling is more invigorating and fun as it allows you to enjoy and have different experiences outdoors. When compared to walking or running, cycling burns just as much calories. However, cycling is a low impact exercise meaning, it is easier on the joints. For instance, you can have short rides on weekdays and longer rides on weekends.
